“The unreality of reality” chapter 6

 

책을 읽기 시작할 때의 일이다. 
아이가 와서 물었다. 위대한 개츠비? 재미있어?
내가 답했다. 응 재미있지. 근데 좀 쓸쓸해.
아이가 되물었다. 그럼 왜 제목이 위대한 개츠비야? 쓸쓸한 개츠비여야지.
그렇네.
 

당시 내가 보고 있던 부분은 solitary dinner나 개츠비가 바다 건너편 데이지 집의 초록 등을 보며 손을 뻗는 부분이었던 것 같다. 마침내 나는 6 챕터에서 수긍했다. 개츠비가 왜 위대한지.
그는 자신이 세운 이상을 굳건하게 따르는.
신의 아들이었다.
 

왼쪽 플라톤은 이상 하늘을 가리키고 오른쪽 아리스토텔레스는 현실 땅을 말하고 있다.고 한다. 그럼. 둘을 합치면. 석가모니인가. 천상천사 유아독존 - 한 손은 하늘 다른 손은 땅.

(미리 붙임: 여기 끄적인 것들이 다 그렇지만. 내 감상임. V-club에서 Plato의 이데아 Idea + Renan의 예수의 생애 Life of Jesus에 촉발되긴 했으나 망고 내 생각이라는 선을 긋는다. 나중에 부끄러울 수도 있으니 이렇게 방어기제 잔뜩 써놓고 시작)

And he must be about His Father's business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty.
...
And to this conception
he was faithful to the end.

 

 
자신이 스스로 세운 이상.
그 이데아의 실재를 알기에, 믿기에.
다른 이가 이러쿵 저러쿵 하는 그림자에 무신경했다.
그의 이데아에 동조하는 이들이 더 있었다면.
그는 예수의 경지에 오를 수 있었을까.

 

But his heart was
in a constant, turbulent riot.
...
For a while these reveries provided an outlet for his imagination;
they were a satisfatory hint of
the unreality of reality,

a promise that the rock of the world was founded securely
on a fairy's wing.

 

 

개츠비를 둘러싼 엉뚱한 도시전설 같은 이야기들. 거기에 개츠비는 만족감을 느낀다니 그야말로 '난 놈'이다. 하긴 예수도 당시로선 너무나 이상적인 인간이었을 테지. 어떻게 그의 이상에 동조하는 이들이 불어났을까. 덧붙여, 세계의 바위가 견고하게 요정의 날개 위에 세워져 있다는 인식. 현실의 비현실. 인간 세계의 수 많은 이야기, 드라마, 전설, 신화를 떠올려보면 꼭 부정할 수만은 없는 말이다.

개츠비가 데이지에게 바라는 것.
톰에게 당신을 사랑한 적이 없다고 말하는 것.
정말 너무 많은 것을 바라는 것 같다.
닉도 한 마디 한다.
그녀에게서 너무 많은 것을 바라지는 말라고.
개츠비의 답변이 가관이다.
과거는 당연히 되돌릴 수 있어.

 
 

 
He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that
she should go to Tom and say :
"I never loved you."
After she had obliterated four years with that sentence
they could decide upon
the more practical measures
to be taken. 
...
"I wouldn't ask too much of her,"
I ventured. "You can't repeat the past."
"Can't repeat the past?"
he cried incredulously.
"Why of course
you can!"
...
"I'm going to fix everything
just the way it was before,"
he said,  nodding determinedly.
"She'll see."

챕터 6쯤 오고 보니
개츠비는 이제 한 남자 개인이라기보다는
20세기 초반 미국 그 자체로 보이고.

데이지도 한 여자라기 보다
부유함, 애정, 사치, 쓸쓸함, 세속적 현실 등을 포함하는 하나의 개념 같아 보인다. 이왕이면 현대에 추앙받는 물질적 표상. 자본. 목소리가 돈으로 차 있잖아. 매력 넘치는 목소리.

톰은 전통적인 유럽 - 엄청난 부와 육체적 힘, 과거의 클라이맥스에 대한 끝없는 갈증- 맞는 것도 같다.
 

개츠비와 데이지의 키스신은 더 하다.
아름답고 아련하고 손에 닿고 싶긴한데.
이건 뭐 데이지를 신앙으로
받아들이는 순간에 대한
종교인의 고백 같다.
 

데이지교에서
의식 때 마다 반복할,
기도문 삼을 듯 한,
그런 키스신이다.
 

One autumn night, 
 
...they had been walking down the street when the leaves were falling, and they came to a place whrer there were no trees and the sidewalk was white with moonlight. They stopped here and truned toward each other. Now it was a cool night with that mysterious excitment in it which comes at the two changes of the year. The quite light in the houses were humming out into the darkness and there was a stir and bustle among the stars.
 
Out of the corner of his eye Gatsby saw that the blocks of the sidewalk really formed a ladder and mounted to a secret place above the trees- he could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder.
 
His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy's white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God.
 
So he waited, 
Listening for a moment longer to the tuning-fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her. At his lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and
 
The incarnation was complete.
 
 
 

 

 

어쩐지 데이지에 대한 개츠비 마음이
거의 신앙 같더라니...
 
ps. 이제 나는 결혼했으니 저런 가슴 두근한 감정은 없는 걸까. 한국에서는 결혼하면 사랑하기를 그만둡니까라던 대사가 떠오름. 그리고 둘을 동시에 사랑하는 게 왜 안되지? 또 왜 꼭 과거를 부정해야만 하지? 두 개의 종교를 갖는 건 안되는 거야? 산신령도 느끼고 조상에게 제사도 지내면서 교회나 성당가면 안되나??
