BOOK ONE/ 그 남자, SYME

책에 사임이라는 인물이 나온다. 주인공 윈스턴의 가까운 동료이다.

책에선 동지의 개념이지만, 윈스턴은 동지들 가운데서도 좀 더 같이 있기에 즐거운 사람이라고 표현했다.

 

You did not have friends nowdays, you had comrades; but there were some comrades whose society was more pleasanter than that of others. (Signet, P.48)

 

그는 땅딸막하고, 안경을 낀 똑똑한 언어학자로, 살짝 변태스러운 느낌이 든다. 그도 윈스턴처럼 내부당원이다. 그는 '신어사전' 편찬업무를 담당하고 있다. 당에 완전히 충성하는 정통파(orthodox)이지만, 타고난 심미안과 그에 대한 욕망으로 인해 정통파로 남아있기에 살짝 위험해보이는 인물이다. 실제로 그는 나중에 증발한다.

 

신어란, 말 그대로 새로운 말 Newspeak이다. 이 사회에서 사람들을 통제하는 수단으로 (당의 입장에서는 교화하는 수단으로), 새로운 단어를 만들고 있다. 사임이 그 신어에 대해 설명해준다. 신어란 새로운 말을 만드는 것이 아니라, 말을 줄여나가는 개념이라고. 좋은/나쁜/나은/끝내주는/환상적인/별로인/ 이런 단어들이 한 단어만 어근으로 활용해서 쓸 수 있는 말의 예라는 것. 신어에서는 좋은/안좋은/좀더좋은/매우좋은/좀더안좋은/ 이렇게 정리될 수 있다고 한다.

 

It's a beutiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn't only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms.....

Take 'good', for instance. If you have a word like 'good', what need is there for a word like 'bad'? 'Ungood' will do just as well- better, because it's an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a stronger version of 'good', what sense is there in having a whole string og vague useless words like 'excellent' and 'splendid' and all the rest of then? 'Plusgood' covers the meaning, or 'doubleplusgood' if you want something stronger still.....

In the end the whole notion of goodness and badness will covered by only six words - in reality, only one word. Don't you see the beauty of that, Winston? (P.51)

 

이렇게 해서 당이 얻는 것은? 사람들 사고의 폭을 제한하고, 생각이 이런 저런 방향으로 퍼져나가는 것을 미연에 방지하는 것이란다. 사상범죄 thoughtcrime자체가 불가능하도록. 그는 신어의 본질을 제대로 파악하고 있다. 그러나 이것을 비판하려고 얘기하는 것이 아니라 그 파괴의 아름다움에 대해 얘기한다.

 

그는 그렇다. 로마가 불타는 모습을 보고 아름다움을 얘기했다던 어느 로마 황제 이야기처럼, 아름다움 그 자체에 주목한다. 'the beauty', 'the details that appeals to me' 등의 말을 쓴다. 불행히도 그가 사는 사회에는 그런 남다른 심미안을 채워줄 것이 파괴 뿐이다. 그는 처형장에서 목이 매달려 죽는 사람이 발로 차는 행동, 혀가 파래져서 나오는 장면의 디테일을 본다. 

 

And above all, at the end, the tongue sticking right out, and blue-a quite bright blue. That's the details that appeals to me. (P.49)  

 

배려나 공감에 대해 배우지 않고, 말하지 않는 그 사회에서 그의 날카로움과 심미안은 방향을 저렇게 잡을 수 밖에 없을 듯 하다. 그가 지금 태어났다면, 어떤 오타쿠가 되었을까? SNS에서 줄임말을 의도적으로 퍼뜨리면서 킬킬거리고 있을까? 시대를 관통하는 예술영화 감독 명장이 되어 있을까?
